‘We’re starting to see other states act’ on AI, Jai Jaisimha tells Shift podcast
In a wide-ranging conversation, Transparency Coalition co-founder Jai Jaisimha talks with Shift, Washington state’s center-right political podcast, about AI and child safety, the risks of tech hype, and how right-touch regulation can spur innovation and protect both developers and businesses using AI.
Roughly a year after starting the Coalition with co-founder Rob Eleveld, TCAI has found surprising success by working with state legislators to craft policies that safeguard society while encouraging innovation.
“We’re pushing to have AI built responsibly,” says Jaisimha. “When AI systems are more carefully thought through, when the training data is more properly curated, you’ll end up with solutions that continue to advance humanity as a whole.”
The companies who develop AI models—the CEOs, the project managers, the engineers—must be the ones who act responsibly and ethically. “An AI model is an excellent parrot,” says Jaisimha. “But it has no notion of the world’s deeper underpinnings. It has no morality.”
